Day of the Dead parades return
On November 1 and 2, people across Mexico celebrated
the Day of the Dead. Called Día de los Muertos in
Spanish, Day of the Dead is a celebration of life and
death. People remember friends and family who have
died and leave out food they once enjoyed as a
welcoming gesture to the spirits of the deceased.
Parades were canceled last year due to the pandemic.
Sudan
Teachers arrested in protests
Nearly 100 teachers have been arrested in Sudan after
they went on strike to protest the army’s seizure of power
in the country in October. Since then, civilians have been
demonstrating for democracy (government in which the
people choose leaders). Teachers and protesters say police
used tear gas and violence against them, leaving many injured.

Calls to end fi ghting
Ethiopia marked a year of confl ict
during which thousands of people
died and millions lost their homes.
Fighting began after the Ethiopian
government attacked the Tigray
People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), the
party that ruled the northern Tigray
region. The TPLF fought back, and the
fi ghting spread. The United Nations
Security Council (responsible for
maintaining international peace and
security ) called for the fi ghting to end.
