Afghanistan
Help sought to fi ght hunger crisis
Millions of people will face starvation unless Afghanistan
receives more aid, said David Beasley, head of the World Food
Program (an organization that addresses world hunger).
Beasley asked world leaders to send money and aid. About
23 million people are facing starvation in Afghanistan, and 45
million people worldwide do not have enough food.

Nepal
Dogs honored in major festival
On November 3, Hindus in Nepal spent a day honoring dogs.
It was part of the annual fi ve-day Tihar Festival, during which
a diff erent animal is celebrated each day. Hinduism is the
majority religion in Nepal and India. On the festival’s second
day, dogs, including stray dogs, are bathed, given treats,
and wear fl ower garlands around their necks. Other animals
honored during the festival include crows, ravens, and cows.

Baghdad, Iraq
Leader survives att ack
Iraq’s prime minister (head of government),
Mustafa al-Kadhimi, was unharmed after an
attempt to kill him. A drone carrying
explosives struck his home in Baghdad and
injured six bodyguards. Security services shot
down two more drones. The attack follows
violent clashes over recent election results.

China
Video game Fortnite is banned
Starting on November 15, gamers in China will no longer
be able to play Fortnite, one of the world’s most popular
online video games. The company that makes Fortnite
has been testing the game in China for three years.
Although they didn’t reveal why the game is shutting
down there, the decision is believed to be related to the
Chinese government’s crackdown on online gaming.

Chennai, India
Floods cause
schools to shut down
Heavy rainfall resulted in severe
fl ooding in the city of Chennai, in
the southern Indian state of Tamil
Nadu. It was the heaviest rainfall in
the region since 2015. Emergency
shelters were set up as hundreds of
people were evacuated from their
homes, and all schools and colleges
in the city and nearby areas were
closed. At the time The Week Junior
went to press, there had been at
least fi ve deaths due to the fl ooding.
