Octagon Marking Gauge

ANY CRAFTSPEOPLE KNOW THEtraditional method for marking
a square to make an octagon: First, draw diagonals as shown in
the sketch. Then, with a compass set to one-half the diagonal, draw
arcs from two corners. Reset the compass and walk it around the
square to mark the corners of the octagon.

tapered workpiece.
