Horizontal Vise

T

HIS HORIZONTAL VISE,INSTALLEDon a workbench, is indispens-
able for sanding, routing, carving, and planing. For many opera-
tions it holds the work better than bench dogs. The vise consists of
three simple parts: a bench screw, an oak jaw, and a wooden step-
block. Mount the bench screw’s nut to the bench from the bottom so
that the surface will be flat if you remove the vise. Cut the 2-in.-thick
jaw about 20 in. or so long. Drill an oversize hole in the jaw about
7 in. from the back and fasten the bench screw through the hole.
Bandsaw the step-block from a 4x4. Cut the steps taller one way than
the other so you can flip the block and use it both ways. To keep the
back end of the jaw from slipping off the sides of the step-block, glue
a piece of plywood to each side.
