Marking Dovetail Pins
H
ERE’S A TRICK THAT SIMPLIFIESthe critical step of marking dove-
tails. Cut the tails in the drawer side first. Lay a handplane on its
side on the bench, and clamp the drawer front (on which the pins will
be marked) in the vise to the height of the plane. It’s easy to lay the
drawer side across the plane body and the clamped drawer front and
then transfer the outline of the tails to the pins by marking them with
a knife or an awl.
