standard score n
(in testing and statistics) a type of derived score by which scores or
values from different measures can be reported or compared using a
common scale. For example, in order to compare a student’s scores on two
tests of different lengths, a standard score might be used. A standard score
expresses a raw score as a function of its relative position in a distribu-
tion^1 of score, and is thus usually easier to interpret than the raw score.
Commonly used standard scores are the t score and the z score.
