a person who takes a test or examination. The term “test taker” is used
throughout this dictionary.

an approach to teaching where students first do an activity without teacher
support (the first Test) to see how well they know a target item. The teacher
then presents the new learning item (Teach), then asks the students to carry
out another task to assess their learning (the second Test). This is said to be
a useful technique at intermediate levels and above, since it enables the
teacher to determine the learners’ needs.

a test-taking skill that enables a person to do well on certain kinds of test by
using their familiarity with the characteristics and formats of tests to help
them guess the correct answer. For example, in taking a reading compre-
hension test based on multiple choice questions, a test taker may analyze
the alternatives given, eliminating unlikely choices, until only one remains,
and then choose this as the correct answer. Test writers try to avoid test
items that can be answered in this way.

1 It is normally made up of several sentences that together create a struc-
ture or unit, such as a letter, a report, or an essay (however one word

3 It has a particular communicative function or purpose.
4 It can often only be fully understood in relation to the context in which it
occurs.
