they may have missed much basic learning for read-
ing and math. Parents should know that it will take
time for them to catch up to other children of the
same age.


Evaluation


Parents and teachers are likely to notice positive out-
comes of treatment before the child does. Medica-
tions are often effective in decreasing hyperactivity
and impulsivity and improving attention relatively
quickly, if the child responds to them. Improved so-
ciability, peer relationships, and academic achieve-
ment happen more slowly and gradually but are pos-
sible with effective treatment.


CONDUCT DISORDER
Conduct disorderis characterized by persistent
antisocial behavior in children and adolescents
that significantly impairs their ability to function
in social, academic, or occupational areas. Symp-
toms are clustered in four areas: aggression to peo-
ple and animals, destruction of property, deceitful-
ness and theft, and serious violation of rules (Steiner,
2000). People with conduct disorder have little
empathy for others; they have low self-esteem, poor
frustration tolerance, and temper outbursts. Con-
duct disorder frequently is associated with early
onset of sexual behavior, drinking, smoking, use
of illegal substances, and other reckless or risky
