ORGANIZATION AND CREATIVITY

Many people think that being orga-
nized and structured creates a rigid
environment that stifles creativity and
creative impulses.
Not so, according to authors Mike
Vance and Diane Deacon. Creativity
does not tend to flourish in a disor-
ganized environment. This is where
many team leaders and project teams
go wrong. They approach a project in
an unstructured manner in hopes that
creativity and innovation will abound—
only to be disappointed.
Creativity, innovation, and big results
occur faster in an organized environ-
ment. For example, Disney Imagineers
use “displayed thinking” or life-sized
storyboards that cover entire walls to
post ideas, draw correlations between
them, and capture new ideas that
spring from old ones. None of that
would be possible without organizing
the ideas first.
