THIS IS ONE OF A NUMBER OF VIEWS OF ARCHITECTURE
and landscape by Tiepolo which form a relatively small
part of his drawings corpus. It has been dated by Knox
to circa 1757-1759 (1974, p- 83) and is associated with
other views made during the time of the artist's work at
the Villa Valmarana, Vicenza (1757), and in Udine (1759).
Although the villa shown in the drawing is typical of the
Veneto, it has not been identified. As Knox has pointed
out, the central section of the drawing showing the stair-
case and part of the facade was used by Tiepolo's son Gio-
vanni Domenico in his Lazarus at the Rich Man's Gate
(Musee de Besangon; Knox 1974, ill. p. 83). Domenico's
drawing contains a slightly greater degree of architec-
tural accuracy in detail, an issue of little interest to his fa-
ther, who used the motif as a pretext for an analysis of
tone and texture.
