drawn late in life, it is comparable in pose and expressive
character to a pen-and-pencil self-portrait in the National
Portrait Gallery, London (inv. 3023), dated 1736. An-
other drawing showing the artist wearing a turban, in
similar technique (with red chalk), was sold just after this
one at Sotheby's from the same source (London, 1978,
lo.t. 24). The use _. in. the A Museum x , s , sheet ^111,1, of black chalk on
blue paper with luminous white chalk highlights reflects
an interest in Venetian draughtsmanship, and the deep
shadows recall contemporary drawings by Piazzetta.
