ANDREA DEL SARTO
Florence 1486-1530
Andrea del Sarto was among the leading painters of the
High Renaissance in Florence. Although he was strongly
influenced by his older contemporaries, especially Leo-
nardo, Fra Bartolommeo, and Michelangelo, he rapidly
developed a distinctive style characterized by rich effects
of tone and color and subtly poetic expressive meaning.
Sarto was responsible for numerous major paintings and
frescoes in Florence, including the cycle of the life of the
Baptist in the Chiostro degli Scalzi and the Miracles of San
Filippo Benizzi and the Birth of the Virgin in SS. Annun-
ziata. In 1518/19 he resided in France at the invitation of
Francis I, but he soon returned to Florence, where his
wife had remained. Sarto was highly influential on the
next generation of Florentine painters, especially his pu-
pils Pontormo and Rosso.
HANS BALDUNG GRIEN
Schwabisch-Gmiind circa 1484/85-Strasbourg 1545
Born into a family of physicians, lawyers, and scholars,
Hans Baldung, surnamed Grien, was among the earliest
German artists to come to the profession from a learned
rather than an artisanal background. He received his first
training around 1499 in Strasbourg or possibly Swabia.
About 1503 he entered Durer's workshop in Nuremberg,
quickly assimilating the master's graphic style. During
this period Baldung produced paintings, prints, and
drawings as well as designs for stained-glass windows.
In 1507 he left for Halle, where he executed the Martyrdom
of Saint Sebastian (Nuremberg, Germanisches Nation-
almuseum), one of his first major commissions. In 1509
he settled in Strasbourg, where he stayed for the remain-
der of his life, save for the years 1512—1516, when he lived
in Freiburg im Breisgau and painted the Coronation of the
Virgin (Freiburg, Minister). As a result of the Refor-
mation, Baldung turned increasingly to secular subjects.
Especially powerful are his woodcuts portraying the de-
monic forces of nature, such as the Bewitched Groom of
1544. The most gifted of Durer's pupils, Baldung is the
major representative of the expressionist trend in Ger-
man art of the early sixteenth century.
BACCIO BANDINELLI
Florence 1493 -1560
Baccio Bandinelli began as an apprentice in the work-
shop of Giovan Francesco Rustici and distinguished
himself early in his career both as a sculptor skilled in
marble and bronze and as a draughtsman. Youthful
works such as the Saint Peter'. (1515) for the Duomo in the
city of Florence reveal his admiration for the Quattro-
cento masters and especially for the antique, which he
studied diligently. Bandinelli was deeply influenced by
Michelangelo, becoming both his imitator and his rival.
His affiliation with Cardinal Giuliano de' Medici, later
Pope Clement VII, was of major importance to his ca-
reer both in Florence and in Rome. For his patron Ban-
dinelli created the marble Orpheus and Cerberus (Flor-
ence, Palazzo Vecchio) and the well-known Hercules and
Cacus (1534; Florence, Piazza della Signoria). One of
is greatest works was the marble choir screen he began
n 1547 for the Duomo; it was unfinished at the time of
is death.
