gatorsare in the processof re-
viewingsurveillancefootageto
attemptto identifyother suspects
responsiblefor thisbrazenact,”
the departmentsaid.
ThespectacleSaturdaynight
wasone of several incidentsof
lootingand shopliftingreported
at high-endretail storesaround
the BayArea overthe weekend.
On Fridaynight,thieves broke
into at least10stores,includinga
Louis Vuitton in San Francisco’s
Union Square.Andon Sunday
night,officers in Hayward,about
a30-minute drivefromSan Fran-
cisco,wereinvestigatingafter a
group of smash-and-grab bur-
glarsdestroyed glass cabinets
andstolemerchandisefrom a
malljewelrystore.
“Thesecrimesare happening
aroundthe Bayand acrossthe
country,”San FranciscoDistrict

AttorneyChesa Boudin tweeted
Saturday. “I standinpartnership
withour local,regional,state, and
federal partnersas we workto-
getherto do whatever it takes to
keep you safe.”
Incidentsof retail theft and
organizedcrimehave marredSan
Francisco’s imagerecently.Phar-
macieslikeWalgreensandCVS
have bemoaned blatantacts of
shoplifting and shutteredseveral
locationsas aresult.In Septem-
ber,cityofficialsannouncednew
tactics for fighting the crime
wave,includingaddingmorefoot
patrolsand additionalinvestiga-
torsto the policedepartment’s
organizedretail crimeunit.
This weekend’s crimewavebe-
gan Fridaynight about8p.m.as
SanFranciscopoliceresponded
to reports of lootingand burglary
aroundUnion Square,apopular
shoppingdistrict. Videoscircu-
lating on socialmediashowloot-

ers ransackingaLouis Vuitton
store after shatteringthe win-
dows.Onepersoncanbe seen
climbing ashelvingdisplayto
grab ahandbagat the top, while
anotherdraggedalargepiece of
luggageoutside.Yet anotherran
fromthe store withan armfulof
shoesand clothing.
ABC7News reported thatover
$1 millionin merchandisewas
stolenfromUnion Squarestores.
One videoshowspolicesmash-
ing the windowsof aMustang
outsidethe store and forcibly
removingapersonfromthe vehi-
cle. At anewsconferenceSatur-
day, SanFranciscoPolice Chief
Bill Scottsaid the officers“were
confrontingan armedindividual”
insidethe Mustang.
As of Saturday, policehad ar-
rested eightpeopleand seized
twovehiclesthought to be con-
nected to the crimes,including
the Mustang,Scottsaid.
“I thinkthe peoplethattried to
do this and the peoplethatdid do
this,it wasconcerted,”hesaid.
“There’s no doubtin my mind
thatthiswas not unplanned.”
Thefollowingevening,Nord-
strom employeesand shoppersin
WalnutCreekwereambushedby
approximately 80 thieves who en-
teredthe store in unison just

before 9p.m., policesaid.
Jodi Hernandez, areporter
with NBCBayArea, was outside
the store and recordedfootageof
whatshe dubbedthe “flashmob
robbery.”Hernandezsaidabout
25 cars blocked the streetinfront
of Nordstrombefore the occu-
pantsstormedinsideandthen
returnedto the vehicleswithsto-
len merchandise.
Three peoplewerearrested in
connection withthe theftsSatur-
daynight,accordingto police:
30-year-oldDana Dawson and
32-year-oldJoshuaUnderwoodof
San Francisco and 18-year-old
RodneyRobinson of Oakland.
TheWalnutCreekPolice Depart-
mentdid not respondto an email
fromTheWashington Post late
Sundayrequestingan update on
its investigation.
On Sunday, however,the de-
partment cautioned residents
thatthe same groupof thieves
mightbe planninganotherheist
thatevening.
“This has not beenconfirmed,
but out of an abundanceof cau-
tion, we’realerting businesses
andresidentsto be prepared,”
policetweeted. “The PD is calling
out add’l officersandreserves,
andsomestores mayconsider
closingearlyor takingotherpre-

cautions.There is no specific time
or target knownrightnow.”
On Sundaynight,atthe South-
landMall in Hayward,agroup of
thieves carryinghammers
smashed glasscases and stole
jewelryfromSam’s Jewelers,local
mediaoutlets reported.
Lt. Mark Ormsbyof the Hay-
wardPolice Departmenttold the
San FranciscoChroniclethatin-
vestigators do not yethave
enough information to tie the
incidentto the othercrimesin the
BayArea.
JimDudley, aretired San Fran-
ciscopoliceofficer whoteaches
criminaljustice at San Francisco
State University, said the burglar-
ies mightbe the resultof a“per-
fectstorm”created by corpora-
tionsandpolicymakers in Cali-
fornia,wheremanyretailershave
“nochase”policies regarding
shoplifters and whereat least
$950 of merchandise mustbe
stolen for stateprosecutors to
pressfelonycharges.
Theweekend’s looting and
shoplifting incidents“seemto be
coordinated, withtools,lookouts,
vehiclesfor getawayand swarm-
ing tactics usedby criminalswith
intentto plunder,” Dudley told
the Chronicle.
