WHAT WENT WRONG?

Pyelonephritis is an infection involving the kidneys. Inflammation of the tissue
accompanies the infectious process. The most common bacteria are E. coli, Kleb-
siella, Enterobacter, Proteus, Pseudomonas,andStaphylococcus saprophyticus.
Typically the infection begins in the lower urinary tract and ascends upward. Identi-
fication of infections and initiation of treatment is important to prevent the infec-
tion from getting worse.

PROGNOSIS

tions from pyelonephritis. Impaired renal function may complicate recovery in
some patients. Septic shock may occur.
