A broad area of high pressure
situated in the North Atlantic
will drive a northerly fl ow, with
a cold air mass moving across
the British Isles behind a cold
front. Many inland areas will be
dry with sunny spells, although
scattered wintry showers
will affect some coastlines. A
frontal system will push cloud
and rain in from the north later
and overnight into tomorrow.Highs and lows

W
inter seems to have
arrived early, and
this weekend will
feel bitterly cold in
raw Arctic winds,
with snow showers in many eastern
and northern areas. It is a big shock
after a largely mild autumn, and the
roots of this dramatic change in the
weather may lie thousands of miles
away in the Pacific Ocean.
The unmistakable signs of La
Niña have emerged in the Pacific, as
tropical seas have turned cooler
towards South America. This La
Niña is expected to grow over the
next three months to reach
moderate strength, setting off
drenching rains in southeast Asia
and eastern Australia, while South
America will turn drier in the west.
The effects will also be felt in the
UK. The sudden arrival of our
present cold spell may be the work
of La Niña, although by late winter
it could turn mild, wet and stormy.
“In late autumn and early winter
La Niña tends to lead to high
pressure developing in the mid-
Atlantic, which stops Atlantic
weather systems from delivering
mild air to the UK, allowing cold
conditions to intensify,” said Adam
Scaife, head of long-range
forecasting at the Met Office. “In
late winter La Niña tends to drive a
strengthening of the jet stream
towards the Arctic, increasing
storminess and heavy rainfall, while
bringing milder conditions.”
It is reminiscent of the infamous
early winter of 2010-11 when Britain
was plunged into a Siberian freeze
from late November into December
during a very powerful bout of
La Niña.
It is not the only thing that drives
our winter weather. Last winter
there was an episode of La Niña, but
it had little impact because other
factors came into play, such as winds
in the stratosphere blowing east or
west around the Equator. This
winter the stratospheric winds are
sweeping eastwards, weakening the
jet stream across the Atlantic, and
that raises the chances of cold
weather in Britain. Balanced against
that, the rise in global temperatures
will moderate any freeze in the UK.
