Troy Collins
T
o watch Troy Collins paint is to fi nd
yourself immersed in “an on-location
classroom” where you can watch and
learn painting techniques from one of
the top landscape impressionists in the
United States today. He graciously spends
time explaining the way he applies the
massive amounts of oil paint to the canvas
and how he distinguishes the steps and
movement with each stroke of his palette
knife. Whether you are an adult or a young
child, you leave mesmerized by his ability
to bring otherworldly light and wonder to
each painting he creates.
Two of Collins’ lifelong students (and
daughters), Mika Collins and Cecille
Schulz, are now making their way into
the art world with the same energy and
design insight that their father possesses.
They have already experienced a sold-out
show last March and are now showing in
Montana galleries. Each daughter brings
her own individual style to their creations
but much of their inspiration comes
directly from growing up and spending
time with their father in his studio.
Shulz says, “The Bitterroot Valley is
where the creating happens: in a shared
space with our dad. The space may be
tight at times, but dad’s grace is over-
fl owing and that makes all the diff erence
in the world.”
Collins has an upcoming one-man
show with Mountain Trails Gallery in
Park City, Utah, December 17 through 31.
