Karl Lagerfeld!

Prepare for the most stylish yard sale ever. Starting

this week, Sotheby’s will be holding auctions of

more than 1,000 items from the late Karl Lagerfeld’s

estate. Rest assured it would have had the designer’s

seal of approval — he once told Women’s Wear Daily

that he never remained attached to material things

for long. “I find the joy of collecting, the fun of hunting

for objects, the exciting thing,” he said. “But once

I [have] it, I lose interest.” He even gave away his old

Basquiat and Warhol paintings because he thought

they “would not last”. It took Sotheby’s more than three

months to catalogue the pieces, taken from his former

homes across Europe, including apartments in Paris

and Monaco and a country pile near Versailles (top

right and above right), the last one he bought

before his death in 2019. Expect fine art, furniture

and a few eccentric objets. For instance: a bell jar

filled with his trademark white collars (far right),

more than 200 pairs of his fingerless gloves, a pair

of Aston Martin dumbbells, and two Maison

Martin Margiela champagne buckets, starting at
