What the heck is cryptidcore?
Right, strap in for this. Cryptidcore is the aesthetic based around
cryptids — mythological creatures such as Bigfoot, the Yeti and
the Loch Ness monster — that is attracting a growing online
community. According to Google Trends, global searches for
cryptids are at a high since the start of the year. So what does the
average cryptid-head look like? They’re fans of shows like Stranger
Things, Twin Peaks and The X-Files, listen to podcasts such as
Welcome to Night Vale and read HP Lovecraft and conspiracy theories
on Reddit. They wear flannel shirts, cargo shorts and Dr Martens and
probably have a backpack with iron-on patches. The Mothman —
a 7ft-tall man-bird — is a romantic pin-up, with fans considering him
the “f ***boy of cryptids”. #Sexymothman has 1.6 million views on
TikTok and there’s now merch with slogans like “50% man, 50%
moth, 100% boyfriend material”. Sigh.
