KIDNEY TRANSPLANTATION
Definition:
Kidney transplantation means the treatment of chronic renal failure
by surgical implantation of a kidney that is obtained from either healthy
kidney donor or brain stem dead cadaver.
Principle:
- Kidney transplantation is performed by doing a unilateral
nephrectomy for the donor to be implanted into the patient with end
stage renal disease "The recipient". - The new kidney is placed in the patient's abdomen, usually in the right
iliac fossa. The artery and vein are anastomosed to patient's vessels
(usually internal iliac) and the ureter is implanted into the bladder
(Fig. 5.4).
