Pa r iÓn ̄ama-t ̄apa-samskÓ ara-du ̄ hkhair guÓ Óna-vÓrtti-virodhac ca du ̄ Óhkham eva
sarvam vivekinaÓ Óh.
All is suffering to discriminating persons, because of misery result-

and because of conflict between the mind’s modifications (vÓrttis) and the
basic constituents of matter (guÓnas).

HeyamduÓ Óhkham anagatam. ̄
Suffering not yet come can be eliminated (heyam).
YS 2:16
DraÓsÓtÓr-dr ́syayoÓh samyogo heya-hetuÓ Óh.
The cause (hetu)of suffering is the conjunction of Seer and seen.
YS 2:17
Tasya hetur avidy ̄a.
The cause [of the conjunction of Seer and seen ] is ignorance [i.e.,
puruÓsa’signorance of its true nature as consciousness].

Tad-abh ̄avat sa ̄ myogÓ ̄abh ̄avo h ̄anaÓm tad dÓr ́seÓh kaivalyam.
By removal (hanam) of ignorance, the conjuction between Seer and
seen is eliminated, and this is the liberation of the knower.
YS 2:25
Viveka-khyatir aviplav ̄ ̄a h ̄anop ̄ayaÓh.
