Radiographic procedure that uses electromagnetic energy to produce multiplanar,
cross-sectional images of the body
In the respiratory system, MRI is used to produce a scan of the chest and lungs. MRI does
not require a contrast medium, but it may be used to enhance visualization of internal
structures.
Test that diagnoses sleep disorders by recording various aspects of sleep, such as eye
and muscle movements, respiration, and electroencephalography (EEG) patterns
(See Fig. 4–10.)
Group of tests that measure the capacity of the lungs and the volume of air during
inhalation and exhalation
PFTs can diagnose lung diseases, measure the severity of lung impairments, and check
to see how well treatment for a lung disease is working.
Common lung function test that measures and records the volume and rate of
inhaled and exhaled air and is used to assess pulmonary function by means of a
spirometer
Spirometry is most useful when assessing for obstructive lung diseases, especially asthma
and chronic pulmonary disease (COPD). (See Fig. 4–11.)
