10–54 A total hip replacement (THR), or total hip arthr/o/plasty, is a surgical
procedure that replaces the upper end of the thighbone (femur) with a metal ball
and resurfaces the hip socket (acetabulum) with a metal shell and plastic liner.
The acetabulum is plastic coated to avoid metal-to-metal articulating surfaces.
