A
PEREGRINE FALCON
It is known as the fastest animal.
TRUE: In a dive, this bird hits speeds of
200 miles an hour. It could travel from
the top of the Empire State Building to
the ground in four seconds.
The peregrine falcon eats bats.
TRUE: The peregrine falcon’s menu
also includes hundreds of different
kinds of birds, including ducks, gulls,
pheasants, pigeons, and songbirds.
To other birds, it’s like a feath-
ered flying warrior.
TRUE: While in midair, it captures prey
or kicks it hard enough to stun or kill.
Peregrines rarely travel more
than a few miles.
FALSE: Some peregrine falcons travel
long distances—more than 10,000 miles
in a year.
A peregrine can’t survive in a
city.
FALSE: Many of these birds make nests
on skyscrapers, a good sign of a come-
back for this once endangered species.
