A dog has a better sense of smell
than an elephant.
FALSE: An elephant’s smell is better than
a dog’s. It uses smell to locate herd mem-
bers, avoid danger, and find food and
water. It may smell water 12 miles away.

It could lift you and seven of your
friends with its trunk.
TRUE: An African elephant can lift more
than 600 pounds. It’s so strong that it can
uproot a tree.

Tusks stop growing when the
elephant turns 10 years old.
FALSE: Tusks never stop growing and
can lengthen up to seven inches a year.

You can leap farther than an el-
ephant.
TRUE: Elephants cannot jump.

An adult’s molar is brick-size.
TRUE: Each tooth weighs about five
pounds. An elephant has four large
teeth that grind the bark, leaves, and
plant parts that it eats.
