SUYUTI: He was the son of Ubayd b. Khayir b. Samud b. Khayir b. Shem b. Noah. A physical description of him is given. He lived 40 years and was a prophet between Noah and Abraham. According to another he was the son ofUbayd b. Khazar b. Samud b. `Ad b. Uz b. Aram b. Shem b. Noah,
and died at 58 in Mecca (2:360).

of the Midianites (11:85) HADITH: --TABARI: He was Moses' father-in-
law Jethro (3:31). He was sent as a prophet to the Midianites and "the
masters of the thorn bush" (2:145). His people were punished for cutting
dirhams (2:147). SUYUTI: Some say his name was Ibn Mikyal. According
to one, his name was Ibn Mikyal b. Yashjan b. Levi b. Yacob. Another
writes he was Shuayb b. Mikyal b. Yashjan b. Madyan b. Abraham al-Khalil. He was a prophet sent to the peoples of Madyan and Aika as an apostle; he prayed much. In his old age, he lost his sight. Some say no other prophet was sent to two peoples aside from Shuayb (2:360-1).

QUR'AN: Zacharias could not speak for three nights (days) after receiving
the promise of John's birth (19:1f). Zacharias asks for an heir for himself
and the house of Jacob (19:5). Mary is taken care of by Zacharias (3:30f).
