In the wake of tourism all but
grinding to a halt during the
Covid-19 pandemic, the Gambia
is embracing the return of
European visitors. Despite its
natural beauty and significant
historical interest, the river
tended not to be a major feature
of the itineraries of most visitors,
who instead generally gravitated
to the sandy resorts of the coast.
It’s hoped the Gambia’s
community-focused initiatives
will encourage travellers to
venture inland instead, to wend
their way along West Africa’s
life-giving waterway.
