STAR LETTER
Green grass of home
I loved Pól Ó Conghaile’s article on Northern
Ireland and the Sperrin Mountains (October
2021). As a Northern Irishman, the rolling
hills, gorges and craggy mountains of the
country have been a great source of comfort,
catharsis and peace during what’s been
a turbulent two years for everyone. The
mountains stood like sentinels, as time
passed, in turn, too quickly or too slowly
for us all, reminding us all to savour every
second. Being forced to rest our itchy feet
for so long made everyone reconnect and
appreciate the natural beauty of what we’re
blessed with here. The Sperrin Mountains
oft en get overshadowed by the more
prominent Mourne Mountains, but their
sunlit slopes and the roaming deer and foxes
give it a beauty all its own. JOHN CULBERT

Island dreams
Travel can still feel like a faraway fantasy to
some of us, but I was transported reading
about the Caribbean in your December issue
— the cover alone had me dreaming of warmer
climes! I’ve only ever been to the Bahamas,
but I’ve fond memories of its people, food and
beaches and have vowed to return some day.
Your article gave me plenty of inspiration for a
diff erent island escape, however — and a few
surprises, too, including the Irish community
in Montserrat and the love of country music
in St Lucia. Too much choice, so little time. I’ll
just have to get planning. SUZANNE LEES

Ice and easy
I picked up my fi rst copy of National
Geographic Traveller while sitting in the
hairdresser’s, and on opening the pages I
found your story on Iceland (September 2021),
a place I’d been thinking of visiting for some
time. The article was particularly appealing
as I love the thought of being surrounded
by nature and seeing the Northern Lights.
The wildlife imagery was beautiful and
the adventure itineraries gave me plenty of
inspiration — especially visiting the working
horse ranch. CAROLINE BIDEN
