BIG PICTURE

Yellowstone National

Park, Wyoming, US
The Grand Prismatic Spring is one of the
most incredible places to view from above.
But taking pictures is rarely straightforward,
given the windy conditions and the spring’s
location in a high-elevation, mountainous
corner of the park. It ’s equally as turbulent
below ground: Yellowstone contains half of
all the world’s known geothermal features,
with more than 10,000 examples, and also
has the world’s largest concentration of
geysers (more than 300, two thirds of all
those on the planet). Despite the spring’s
challenging location, I managed to take this
image at sunset while I was flying my 1976
single-engine Piper Warrior plane over the
park. JASSEN TODOROV // PHOTOGRAPHER
