is nominating JRR Tolkien,

right, aiming to rescue the

Oxford don and author of the

Lord of the Rings trilogy from

the hippies, who he thinks

have claimed Tolkien as their

own. “The fascinating thing

to me about Tolkien,”

Ferguson says, “is that his

sensibility is so profoundly

conservative — with a small

‘c’... he was such a

reactionary!” Ferguson is

assisted by the poet (and

Bilbo Baggins lookalike)

Malcolm Guite. And he

needs his wingman — the

host Matthew Parris doesn’t

believe in elves and dwarfs

and isn’t so keen on rescuing
