Why righteous anger has

a place in defending faith

little value without an ethical
lifestyle.
The angry rant in Isaiah i,
11-13, back in the 8th century
BCE is strikingly relevant to
this order of priorities. To
translate it colloquially: “I am
sick of your false piety... I
am fed up with your public
displays... Don’t bother
keeping up the pretence... I
am blocking my ears to your
so-called prayers.”
His tirade concludes by
urging his listeners, then and
now, to make action the key
measure of how religious we
are: “Learn to do well, pursue
justice, support the
oppressed.”
Still, there are times when
faith itself needs to be
defended. In fact, this week is
a reminder of that for Jews
worldwide who are
celebrating the festival of
Chanukkah, when the Syrian
empire, which then
controlled the land of Israel,
changed its longstanding
policy and not only demanded
that Jews pay taxes but also
adopt its pagan religion.
Economic and political
control was bearable but
religious subjugation was not,
and it was then that the anger
of the Maccabees erupted in
167BCE and led to an uprising
that eventually achieved
freedom in all three areas.
Their story is detailed in the
Apocrypha, but its passion
has its roots in the Hebrew
Bible.
The anger of the prophets
of old was often ridiculed at
the time, but their message
has long outlived their critics.
It will be the same with their
heirs today, so long as it is
righteous anger, not
narcissistic.

Jonathan Romain is rabbi of
Maidenhead Synagogue. What
Makes Me Angry is published by
Reform Judaism

brigade, condemning those
who oppress weaker
members of society.
Of course, there is a danger
here. How does one avoid
ascribing one’s own agenda to
God? There are too many
instances of other religious
figures, ancient and modern,
whose so-called love of God
leads them to manipulate
followers or to oppress
“unbelievers”.
It is important to handle
anger with care, letting it
blaze forth when appropriate,
but neither misuse it nor let it
turn inwards and consume
you.
With some trepidation,
therefore, a group of 21 rabbis
have just attempted to
replicate prophetic
indignation for today, with a
series of essays on the theme
of “what makes me angry”.
Each one takes a different
topic and they lambast both
their own community and
wider society for its social
sins. These include the way
we treat the homeless,
climate change, controversies
in the trans debate, online
abuse, business ethics, the
wellness industry and cruelty
to animals.
Does this focus on everyday
practicalities, rather than
religious lapses, imply a
reluctance to stand up for
matters of faith? No. First,
there is a strong Jewish
tradition that you show your
love of God by the way you
treat God’s people. If we are
all God’s creatures, then
harming or neglecting any of
them is effectively shutting
the door in God’s face.
Second, important as
prayer and rituals are, way
above them in the hierarchy
of religious merit is personal
behaviour. Wordy prayers
come and go, while intricate
rituals are just reminders to
act well at all times and have

D

id you ever see the
car bumper sticker
that used to be
popular, “If you
aren’t angry, you
aren’t paying attention”?
For some people it brought
a wide smile, others reacted
with a nod of recognition, but
I suspect very few would have
seen it as a religious
command. Yet if we think of
the Bible, being angry is one
of the more common aspects
and the chief culprit is God.
Sometimes, it is with
individuals; at other times, it
is with the Israelites as a
whole.
In fact, if Psalm vii, 11, is to
be believed “God is angry
every day” (and given the
many evils in the world, that
is not surprising).
This holds a practical
question for you and me: if we
are created in the image of
God and aspire to imitatio
dei, what implications does
that have for us? Is it good to
be angry on a daily basis?
What about being meek and
mild, or even turning the
other cheek?
A clue lies in the fact that
there are also many
individuals in the Bible who
are angry, but with clear
distinctions between them.
There is the selfish anger of
those furious that their will is
being frustrated, starting early
on with Cain resenting Abel.
More altruistic is the
righteous anger of those
incandescent that moral
values are being ignored, with
prophets such as Isaiah and
Jeremiah leading the angry
