THE FIGURE OF THE ABDUCTED WOMAN
generated in collecting oral history or in the process of psychotherapy but as part of an
everyday life in which women give expression to their violation. I have tried to pursue
this question in my larger work, where I suggest that in a world torn by violence it seems
to be the task of women to attend to everyday life by looking after children, lighting the
cooking hearth, containing hurts, and thus putting the world together stitch by stitch. It
is to those gifts that I look for a picture of healing the world. How else are we to overcome
the taint of the official discourses that could see the suffering of women who were ab-
ducted and violated, but only for establishing the correct order of the family and the
State?
