Bibliography

Lossky, Vladimir. The Mystical Theology of the Eastern Church. Crestwood,
NY: St. Vladimir’s Seminary Press, 1976. Originally published in French
in 1944, this is a classic treatment of the doctrines of Eastern Orthodoxy,
emphasizing (perhaps over-emphasizing) the difference from the doctrines
of the Western church as represented by Catholicism.

Luther, Martin. Martin Luther: Selections from His Writings. Edited by John
Dillenberger. Garden City, NY: Anchor, 1961. A handy one-volume selection
of Luther’s most important writings, including “Preface to the Epistle of St.
Paul to the Romans,” the sermon on “Two Kinds of Righteousness,” and The
Freedom of a Christian.

Machen, J. Gresham. Christianity and Liberalism. Grand Rapids: Eerdmans,
1923 (often reprinted). The book that, more than any other, de¿ ned the
original position of Fundamentalism in the Fundamentalist-modernist
controversy in the United States.

MacIntyre, Alasdair. Whose Justice? Which Rationality? Notre Dame, IN:
Notre Dame University Press, 1988. A big, dense, dif¿ cult, and original book,
the founding document of “right wing” postmodernism (see Lecture Thirty-
Two), containing a history of Western moral thinking which culminates
(in chap. 28, titled “The Rationality of Traditions”) in an argument that
narrating the history of intellectual traditions is the only way to understand
how rationality really works.

Marsden, George. Fundamentalism and American Culture. New York: Oxford
University Press, 1980. The best single volume on the history and theological
sources of Fundamentalism, including an overview of late 9th century
Revivalism, the Holiness, Keswick movement, and Dispensationalism.

McGuckin, John. Saint Cyril of Alexandria and the Christological
Controversy. Crestwood, NY: St. Vladimir’s Seminary Press, 2004. The
best single-volume introduction to Cyril of Alexandria, the Christian
tradition’s most important theologian of the Incarnation, together with a very
illuminating selection of Cyril’s shorter writings.
