S
torm Arwen wreaked havoc
across the north with
thousands of fallen trees and
powercuts, and northeast
Scotland was hit particularly
hard, but then this region has a long
history of mighty storms.
In the autumn of 1694 a violent
windstorm swept the great dunes
along the shores of the Moray Firth,
whipping up clouds of sand for days
on end and choking the village of
Culbin. This area was known as “The
Granary” of Moray, with 16 farms
and a laird who lived in a mansion.
“The wind comes rushing down
through the openings between the
hills, carrying with it immense
torrents of sand with a force and
violence almost overpowering,”
wrote the geologist John Martin.
“Clouds of dust are raised from the
tops of the mounds and are whirled
about in the wildest confusion and
fall with the force of hail.
“Nothing can be seen but sand
above, sand below and sand
everywhere. You dare not open your
eyes but must grope your way about
as if blindfolded.”
Another account told how the
storm came suddenly without
warning. “The drift, like a mighty
river, came on steadily and
ruthlessly, grasping field after field,
and enshrouding every object in a
mantle of sand. In terrible gusts the
wind carried the sand among the
dwelling houses of the people,
sparing neither the hut of the cottar
nor the mansion of the laird.”
The villagers had to break
through the backs of their houses to
get out and flee for their lives. But
when the storm died out, they
returned home to find a shocking
scene — there was no trace of
Culbin, their houses and the
mansion all totally buried in sand.
The demise of Culbin was not an
entirely natural disaster. For years
the villagers had been tearing up the
tough marram grass growing on the
sand dunes to thatch roofs and use
as fuel. Without the grass, the dunes
were destabilised and the sand free
to blow away. And so the village was
abandoned, buried under some 100ft
of sand, and in the 1920s the area
was eventually turned into a forest.
