Ben Stokes has been declared “good to
go” for the start of the first Ashes Test in
Brisbane on Wednesday. Chris
Silverwood, England’s head coach, and
Joe Root, the captain, will delay
confirming their team for the Gabba
despite Australia naming their starting
XI yesterday.
Silverwood said Stokes, 30, who has
only just returned to the England team
after a period out to recuperate from a
finger injury and to protect his mental
wellbeing, had impressed in the nets.
The talismanic all-rounder has done
well with bat and ball in England’s cur-
tailed preparation for the Ashes series,
and Silverwood was in a bullish mood
yesterday.
“He looks good to go — [Australia]
will be wary,” he said. “They know he
can take anybody down.”

Darren Gough will today announce
that he has accepted a role as
Yorkshire’s director of cricket.
Gough, 51, is one of the most iconic
players in the county’s recent history
and is seen as the ideal candidate to
bring a fresh purpose after the racism
scandal that led to the sacking of his
predecessor, Martyn Moxon, and the
rest of the coaching team.
Yorkshire persuaded the former
England bowler from Barnsley to take
over by allowing him flexibility in how
he does the job. He is expected to con-
tinue to have his main base in Essex,
where he lives with his family.
The county have offered him a
six-figure salary, despite their precari-
ous financial position and the threat of
expensive legal battles with disgruntled

Hamilton slams ‘crazy’

rival after chaotic win

  1. Max Verstappen 369.5pts 2. Lewis Hamilton 369.5pts

Lewis Hamilton set up a winner-
takes-all finale to the Formula One
season after drawing level on points
with Max Verstappen thanks to a
chaotic win in Saudi Arabia, during
which they collided and the
Englishman branded his rival
“f***ing crazy”.
For the first time since 1974 the
two title protagonists will arrive at

the final race of the season, in Abu
Dhabi on Sunday, on equal points.
The championship lead has
swung between the two throughout
the season in one of the fiercest
battles for years. At Monza in
September, Verstappen took
Hamilton out and the duo ended up
out of the race and pointless. If
something similar happens in Abu
Dhabi, Verstappen would be
crowned world champion by virtue
of having won more races.

In Jeddah yesterday, the pair
were engaged in another
compelling duel. With 13 laps left, it
was deemed that Verstappen,
bidding to win his first world title,
had gained an advantage by leaving
the track. He was told to give the
lead back to Hamilton and handed
a five-second penalty.
As he slowed to give the place
back — information which had not
yet been relayed to Hamilton — the
Mercedes ended up hitting the back

of the Red Bull and the world
champion’s front wing sustained
damage, leading Hamilton to say of
his rival: “This guy is f***ing crazy.”
Verstappen, 24, was last night
handed a ten-second penalty for
causing the collision but retained
his second-place finish. Hamilton,
36, said: “I’ve raced a lot of drivers
in my life. There’s a few at the top
who are over the limit, and rules
don’t apply or they don’t think of
