Performance of the week
West Bromwich Albion. Two first-
half goals allowed West Brom to
bring to an end a four-match run
without a win, in a 2-1 local derby
victory away to Coventry City, and
keep them within touching distance
of the automatic promotion places.

Player of the week
Ben Brereton (Blackburn Rovers).
The Stoke-born Chile International
striker continued his remarkable
season with his 17th goal of the
campaign for Rovers in a 1-0 derby
win over Preston North End that
lifted them into fourth.

Goal of the week
Tom Holmes (Reading). An
overhead kick from six yards was a
memorable way for the 21-year-old
defender to mark his first goal in
professional football in the 1-1 draw
with Hull City.

Rising star
Morgan Gibbs-White (Sheffield
United). The Wolverhampton
Wanderers loanee hit his sixth goal
of the season in impressive style as
his side won 3-2 away to Cardiff City.

Villain(s) of the week
Jamie Paterson or referee Andy
Davies, depending on your point of
view. The Swansea City man went
down under a challenge from the
Middlesbrough goalkeeper Luke
Daniels which led to a strong, but
unsuccessful, penalty appeal and
Paterson was booked for simulation.

Stat of the week
Bristol City’s 1-0 victory over Derby
County maintains their run of not
having won a game by more than a
one-goal margin since winning 3-0
away to Birmingham City in March.

Quote of the week
“I warned the players yesterday if
you come here and don’t fight and
compete then you are going to lose
the game. The first 45 minutes we
were soft, very soft,” Lee Bowyer is
critical of his Birmingham players

CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND UP

RB Leipzig dismiss
head coach Marsch

Jesse Marsch has left his job as head
coach of RB Leipzig only two days
before their Champions League game
against Manchester City.
The Bundesliga club made the
announcement yesterday after the
disappointing 2-1 defeat away to
Union Berlin on Friday night. That
loss left Leipzig 11th in the table, while
they are already unable to qualify
from their Champions League group.
Marsch was appointed in the
summer after Leipzig lost Julian
Nagelsmann to Bayern Munich.
Achim Beierlorzer, the assistant
coach, will take charge of the team.

Celtic’s Jota faces
lengthy absence

Ange Postecoglou, the Celtic
manager, admits Jota may not return
to action before the winter break.
The Portuguese winger, who has
scored eight goals this season, was
one of three players who dropped out
of the side for yesterday’s 3-0 win
over Dundee United after picking up
injuries against Hearts in midweek.
He went off with a hamstring injury.
When asked if Jota would be back
before the January break, Postecoglou
said: “It’s hard to say. We’re saying a
few weeks at the moment and he’s
obviously keen to come back.”
