Poppy power
From carpets of colour to a single red flower, poppies make for
a wonderful summer subject. Kate Southall shares her shot
oppies make
beautiful and diverse
subjects at every
stage of their life
cycles, although
sweeping fields of flowers have
become a much rarer sight than
they used to be, thanks to farmland
now being used in so many different
ways. That being said, you can
still find these flaming flowers
throughout the summer months
if you know where to look. The peak
of the season is July and August,
but some plants continue to
flower long into September.
In this project, we’re featuring
Kate Southall’s macro approach
to poppy fields. Her gorgeous
images were taken during the
golden hour, and use backlighting
to outline individual flowers.
The vivid red and green hues of
poppies are so complementary, and
shooting at sunrise or sunset (as
Kate did) provides an extra level of
warmth. Strong daylight will yield
more contrasting shots. The vibrant
shade of poppies can cause trouble
for older camera sensors, so make
sure yours isn’t clipping any tonal
detail. Shoot in Raw mode, and
check the red channel histogram
in Live View to capture the full range
of glorious eye-catching colours.
