Making light leaks Make a light

leak Preset

In order to reuse a light leak
effect that you’ve made, you
need to save a Preset. While
you could save a general preset,
as this will overwrite all your
settings when applied. Choose
‘New Preset’ from the Develop
menu. In the dialog box that
appears, click Uncheck All, then
select Grad Filter and Radial
Filter. Process Version should
be checked automatically. Name
the Preset and click Create.

ften it can be the unintentional event that
really makes a photo – the happy accident,
as it were. Back in the heyday of film,
avoiding light leaking into the camera
was a huge deal. Film, clearly being light-
sensitive, could be ruined by any stray light. Sometimes,
though, this could result in a happy accident where
a light leak could add a lot of character to a photo.
With the Lomography movement railing against the
perfection of digital, people can buy really basic plastic
cameras, like the Holga or the Diana, and deliberately
let light in to create these effects. For those of us in
the firmly digital realm, you can still create the effect
of these random visual intrusions to inject more of
the organic into your photo. While you can get dedicated
light leak files to apply with photo editors, Lightroom
doesn’t use traditional layers, so you can’t use these
in Lightroom. That doesn’t mean you can’t create
your own reusable light leaks, though.
Using Lightroom’s Local Adjustments – the Graduated
Filter, the Radial Filter and the Adjustment Brush – you
can effectively emulate film canister leaks, as well as
general light leaks. The main thing is remember is
that light leaks are a mix of increased light and colour.
