Teach Yourself Visually Knitting

Different styles of sweaters call for
different types of buttonholes. The size
and type of button you’re using also
influences your choice of buttonhole.
However, the eyelet buttonhole, the
one-row horizontal buttonhole, and the
two-row horizontal buttonhole should
get you through most situations.
Before making buttonholes on your
finished pieces, you should practice the
various techniques a few times to make
sure you come up with a nice, neat
buttonhole.

This is the easiest buttonhole to make. It works very well for children’s and
babies’ clothes, as well as for small buttons. It is worked by combining a yarn
over with a knit 2 together: The yarn over makes the hole, and the knit 2 together
decreases to maintain the original stitch count.

1 Work to the point where you want the buttonhole to be and then k2tog, yo;
continue the row as established.

2 On the next row, work the yo as you would a regular stitch.
