Teach Yourself Visually Knitting

(Michael S) #1

To pick up a patch pocket, you need straight pins, a tapestry needle, and
yarn and needles to knit the pocket. You also need a knitting needle one or two
sizes smaller than the one used to knit the garment; this is for picking up the
pocket stitches.

1 Using straight pins, mark the outline of where you want the patch pocket
to be on your garment.

2 Weave the smaller knitting needle under and over horizontally along the
stitches where the base of the pocket will be.

3 Using the yarn you intend to knit the pocket with and the working knitting
needle, purl across the picked-up stitches. (This first row is a wrong side row.)

4 Beginning with a knit row, work from here in stockinette stitch (that is, knit
across on the right side, purl across on the wrong side) until the pocket is the
length you want it to be.

5 Bind off loosely.

6 Pin the pocket sides as shown.

7 Stitch the pockets sides in place, using the overcast stitch you used to
reinforce buttonholes on page 164.
Note:This stockinette stitch pocket has a rolled edge at the top. If you prefer a flat edge, try working
the last^1 ⁄ 2 inch or so in ribbing, seed stitch, or garter stitch. You may also want to steam the pocket
flap to neaten it up before sewing it in place.
