HAT BODY


1 CO 48 (54, 60) sts on straight needles.


2 Beg with a knit row, work in St st (knit on RS, purl on
WS) for 4^3 ⁄ 4 (5^1 ⁄ 2 , 6^1 ⁄ 4 ) inches, ending with a WS row.


SHAPE TOP
Note:In this pattern you decrease by using k2tog (see page 54).


1 Row 1 (RS): K6 (7, 8), k2tog; rep from to end—42
(48, 54) sts.


2 Row 2 and all rem WS rows: Purl.


3 Row 3: K5 (6, 7), k2tog; rep from to end—36
(42, 48) sts.


4 Row 5: K4 (5, 6), k2tog; rep from to end—30
(36, 42) sts.


5 Row 7: K3 (4, 5), k2tog; rep from to end—24
(30, 36) sts.


6 Row 9: K2 (3, 4), k2tog; rep from to end—18
(24, 30) sts.


7 Row 11: K1 (2, 3), k2tog; rep from to end—12
(18, 24) sts.


8 Row 13: K0 (1, 2), k2tog; rep from to end—6 (12, 18) sts.


9 Row 15: K0 (0, 1), k2tog; rep from to end—3 (6, 12) sts.


0 Row 17 (M and L only): K2tog across—3 (6) sts.


!Row 19 (L only): K2tog across—3 sts.


FINISHING


1 Cut yarn, leaving a 24-inchtail. Pull tail through last 3
sts and secure.


2 Steam piece to block.

4 Single crochet around brim to flatten and firm. Weave in rem loose ends.
