FINISHING

For this sweater, you use the three-needle bind-off method to graft shoulder seams
as described in steps 2–9. (See page 146 for more information.)

1 Block all pieces to measurements shown on page 247.

2 Place the 20 sts from the left front onto a size 9 dpn, and do the same for the
20 sts from the back left shoulder; then hold the needles parallel to each other,
with RS together.

3 Insert a third dpn into the first st on the first needle as if to knit, then into the
first st on the second needle as if to knit, and knit the 2 sts as 1.

4 Rep step 3; there should now be 2 sts on the right needle.

5 Pass the first st on the right needle over the second and off.

6 K the next 2 sts on the parallel dpn together.

7 Rep steps 5 and 6, knitting the corresponding sts of each shoulder together and binding off as you go, until 1 st rem on the right needle.

8 Cut yarn, pull through last st, and secure.

9 Rep steps 2–8 for the right shoulder seam.

0 With RS together, line up sleeve cap shaping with armhole shaping and pin in place. Sew sleeve to cardigan.

!Weave in ends, except those that can be used to sew seams.

@Lightly steam seams.

#Place marker for button on left front^1 ⁄ 2 inch down from beg neck shaping.

$Beg at lower edge of right front, use crochet hook to single crochet (see page 194) 1 row up right front, around neck, and back down
left front to edge.

%Work another single crochet row up left front and around neck to the point on the right front opposite the left-side marker. Ch1, then rein-
sert hook after skipping 1 single crochet stitch, about^1 ⁄ 4 inch down from last single crochet, so that the chain button loop lies flush along
the vertical front edge. Then single crochet down until you reach the end of the right front. Cut yarn, pull up through last loop, and secure.

^Weave in rem ends. Sew side and sleeve seams.

&Lightly steam entire sweater, including seams and crochet trim, again.

*Sew button opposite button loop.

FAQ
I would prefer to have buttons running all the way down the front, instead of just
one button at the neck. How can I do that?
To add more buttons and buttonholes to this pattern, work through step 12, above. Then, for step
13, place markers for more buttons along the left front edge: Place one marker 1 inch up from the
bottom, one^1 ⁄ 2 inch down from beg neck shaping, and five more, evenly spaced, between those two.
Work step 14. Work step 15 through to the completion of the first button loop, and then work six
more button loops in the same manner, opposite the markers on the left. Finish as instructed
above, except sew seven buttons opposite the button loops.
