Teach Yourself Visually Knitting

(Michael S) #1

You may think that this method of
casting on stitches looks complicated,
but once you master it, it’s very quick
and easy. This method also provides a
neat, elastic edge. Take care not to cast
on too tightly, or your edge will have
no elasticity. You might want to cast
on to a needle a size or two larger than
the size you should use for the project;
then, when you begin knitting, you
switch to the correct size.

1 Put a slipknot on your needle, leaving a tail
that’s the equivalent of 1 inch per stitch you
plan to cast on, plus a few more inches.
(So if you plan to cast on 12 stitches, leave
a tail that’s about 15 inches long.)

2 Hold the yarn with the tail wrapped over
your thumb and the working yarn over your
forefinger, grasping both ends with your pinky
and ring finger in the center of your palm.

3 Lower the needle to create a V while holding the slipknot in place with your
right forefinger.
