POINT AFTER

This issue’s cover story
explores the creative ways
today’s hyperathletic NFL
quarterbacks throw the ball.
But the idea of a QB finding
success with something less
than textbook mechanics
isn’t completely new. It’s
worth a moment here to
remember the patron saint
of unorthodox passers:
BERNIE KOSAR, who led a
1980s Browns renaissance
with a sidearm style that
drew many a backhanded
compliment. “I have practiced
trying to throw over the top,”
Kosar told SPORTS ILLUSTRATED
in ’88 for a cover story of his
own. “But when it gets down to
it, I always go back to what I’m
comfortable with. I’ve probably
thrown as many passes
underhand in this league as
I have straight overhand.”
That’s something not even
Patrick Mahomes can say.
