Irwin J. Kopin, M.D., is currently Scientist Emeritus in the Section on
Clinical Neurocardiology of the NINDS. He began his NIH career as a
Research Associate in the Laboratory of Clinical Science at the NIMH
in 1957, went on to head the Section on Medicine in this Laboratory
and then became Laboratory Chief. In 1983, he became NINDS Scien­
tific Director, a post he held for more than a decade. He also headed
the Clinical Neuroscience Branch for several years. He has served on
numerous committees, won several medals and awards, participated in
many scientific advisory boards and professional societies, and served
as co-editor or editorial board member for more than 20 scientific jour­
nals. He has authored or co-authored more than 700 articles, reviews,
and book chapters that together constitute a major part of current scien­
tific knowledge about catecholamines.


Guy McKhann, M.D., is Professor of Neurology and Neuroscience and
founding Director of the Zanvyl Krieger Mind/Brain Institute at the
Johns Hopkins University. Previously, he served as the Associate Direc­
tor for Clinical Research and Acting Clinical Director at the NINDS.
His research has included work on multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease,
and, most recently, the neurological and cognitive outcomes in people
following coronary bypass surgery. He has authored, edited, or co­
authored over 200 publications including a neurology textbook and a
book about aging and the brain for the general public. He has served as
an advisor in many settings, from the Vatican to the public television
station WETA on issues relating to the brain. He is a past President of
the American Neurological Association and serves on many other ad­
visory committees and boards.


Richard L. Sidman, M.D., is currently Professor Emeritus of Harvard
Medical School and a member of the Department of Neurology of
the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. He came to the
NIH in 1956 and spent two years as a Senior Assistant Surgeon in the
Laboratory of Neuroanatomical Sciences at the NINDB. He left to go
to Harvard Medical School where he was appointed Bullard Professor
of Neuropathology in 1968 and reached emeritus status in 1999. A mem­
ber of the National Academy of Sciences and a Fellow of the American
