Academy of Arts and Sciences, he has published four books and more
than 200 scientific papers on neuroanatomy, neuropathology, and
neurogenetics. His main contributions have been as a pioneer in work­
ing out modern concepts on patterns of cell genesis and cell migration
in the developing mammalian brain and in using genetic disorders in
mice to analyze diseases causing malformations, premature neuronal death,
and disorders of myelination. His current work is in the use of neural
stem cells.

Donald B. Tower, M.D., Ph.D., came to the NINDB in 1953 as Chief of
the Section on Clinical Neurochemistry, and moved on to be Chief of
the Laboratory of Neurochemistry. He was Acting Associate Director
for Extramural Programs in 1967 and 1968 and became the NINDS
Acting Director in 1973 and Director in 1974. During his tenure as
Director, until 1981, the institute was renamed the National Institute
of Neurological and Communicative Disorders and Stroke. He is a
pioneer in brain chemistry and investigated the biochemistry of the
epileptic focus in excised brain tissue.
