Inscryptionplays well but
unfortunately it just
doesn’t know when to
hold ’em and when to
fold ’em. Shame.

VERDICT

Game Boy Pokémon Trading Card
Game. It trades horror for whimsy,
and calling it ‘a bit different’ would be
an understatement. What was a
one-card-at-a-time deckbuilder
becomes a CCG where I have to
construct a viable deck of 2 0+ cards
from a collection, then tweak it as I
earn booster packs.
Though there’s an automate
option it doesn’t create viably
competitive decks, and I found
manual deck construction a bit of a
chore. Opponents with gimmick
decks that require specific builds to
defeat make it even worse. Get
through this and there’s a third and
final act, which returns to something
more like the format of the first act
only with a sci-fi theme, but
Inscryption lost me before that.
To be totally honest, I was getting
a bit tired of the first act’s structure
before it was over with thanks to
run-based repetition and multi-stage
boss battles. But for those opening
hours, Inscryption was delightfully
creepy and full of new surprises. I
just preferred being trapped in a
spooky cabin to being trapped in a
succession of less interesting
videogames.
