TATE’SIt’s hard to believe it’s just 16 years since the doors ofTate Modern fi rst opened, inviting the British public toperuse the 70,000 works of art inside. Before the turnof the millennium, it led a very different existence asthe derelict Bankside Power Station. But with theintervention of Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron, oil tankards made way for performance art spacesand the industrial building became home to Rothko’ssquares, Picasso’s dancers and Salvador Dali’sinvertebrate phone. Since its opening, the gallery hasattracted 40 million people. This June, the Tate Modern will reveal its latesttransformation, an entirely new building in the formof Switch House. The expanded gallery space willplace a greater emphasis on international art, andthe works of female artists. The developmentcoincides with a signifi cant rehanging of the gallery’spermanent collection, with new displays that willfocus on the way artists work – exploring theirmethods and materials used. When visiting familiarpieces by Matisse and co, visitors will be introducedto new acquisitions from Latin America and Africa. To mark the beginning of a new era, we asked theHead of Displays at Tate Modern Matthew Gale topick out fi ve signifi cant paintings from the permanentcollection: the Tate’s Greatest Hits. The new Tate Modern opens to the public on 17 June,London, SE1. http://www.tate.org.uk``````AS THE NEW TATE MODERN OPENS ITSDOORS, WE ASK THE GALLERY’S HEADOF DISPLAYS MATTHEW GALE TO PICKTHE TOP FIVE PAINTINGS FROM THEPERMANENT COLLECTION28 Tate's Greatest Hits.indd 28 09/06/2016 09:42
