PROMOTIONAL FEATURETHE URBAN SKETCHER ON CREATINGARTWORK IN INKTENSE PENCILS``````You illustrate picture books as well as working as anurban sketcher, how does one complement the other? They are quite separate; the way they complement oneanother is that Iâve been doing picture books for manyyears, and if youâre not careful, when youâre doing the samething, you can get very stale. I find urban sketching is a wayof keeping it fresh. When I am working on picture books,Iâm constrained to a certain style. When I am working in mysketchbook, Iâm much freer, I can use the materials of mychoice. It has a different rhythm to it.``````How do Inktense pencils fit into your urban sketching?Theyâve been an essential staple in my kit for about fouryears. Originally I used them to draw people on trains; I dothat a lot, and one of the things I found so good about themis that I can be in a place where itâs not appropriate tomess about with paint, like a train or plane, where you havevery little space. With three or four pencils and awaterbrush, I can paint anywhere.``````Whatâs your process like when youâre sketching?I am currently artist in residence at the Morgan Centre atthe University of Manchester, as part of a projectsponsered by the Leverhulme Trust, and I often sketch inlectures and tutorials. If Iâve only got three or four minutes,I record the shapes quickly with watercolour. Itâs difficult toget the gestures, but if someone moves their arms, I cancapture that with a flick of watercolour; then I go in with theInktense Pencils. As they work on wet watercolour, I candeal with it very quickly. The pencils work really well for anorganic line; itâs kind of like a contour drawing.``````What advice would you give to someone who is new toInktense Pencils? The strength of Inktense Pencils is that, when you putwater on them, you donât lose your original mark, whereaswith other pencils, the water often washes them away. WithInktense you can create a vigorous and dynamic drawing, then you can put watercolour over them and get two quitedifferent kinds of mark making. My advice would be toexplore that, rather than doing very delicate shading.http://www.lynnechapman.blogspot.com``````Derwent Inktense pencils are highly versatile, vibrant colourswhich are permanent once activated by water.
