54 Artists & IllustratorsFOOD ILLUSTRATIONSplitting her time between oil portraits, illustrationsand design, Sara became a professional at movingbetween mediums. “Over the years I’ve realised thatI need a lot of different projects going at the same timeand it’s a matter of knowing myself and whatstructures I need to create to be productive. I’ll have anoil in my studio and some photographs of food thatI want to paint and I always have graphic design workto do for clients.I wake up and decide what to work on based on theenergy I have that day. For example, if I know that I’ll bedistracted during the day, I’ll do design or illustrations. The income is split evenly and balancing them is verynatural. It’s like cooking, I can boil something, chopsomething [and make something] delicious,” she says. With recent news of a book concession at theMuseum of Modern Art in New York, a recipe collectionthat was originally planned as a creative Christmas giftfor her family has proved to be a fruitful experiment. “Ittook a lot of hard work and a lot of recipes, but I founda way to express myself in the most genuine way Icould and didn’t expect anything in return. I just hopedfor the best. Now I don’t even think about cooking,I just have a catalogue of recipes in my head. I’malready thinking about my next project, maybe I will doa storybook.” Whatever she does next, it’s bound to godown a treat. The Starving Artist Cookbook is published by CountrymanPress, £14.99, available on Amazon.http://www.sarazindesign.com``````ARTIST’S TOOLBOX- My palette is originally from Royal Talens.
