SIDE PROFILE12 31324SIDE PROFILE1I begin with Sap Green and Cadmium Red to establishthe changes of direction along the front edge of the noseand forehead. Then I fi nd the underside of the nose.2I place some mid-tones as I observe them; this skincolour is made from a mix of Yellow Ochre andCadmium Red, and sets the scene for the darks.3Notice the change in direction of the eyebrow; it turnsdown almost as steeply as the nose, leaving a triangleof skin between the eyebrow and edge of the forehead. Theshape of the eyebrow explains the front plane and sideplane of the face. The Ultramarine Blue/Van Dyke Brownmix makes the darks in the eyebrow and nostril. Notice theposition and length of the nostril cavity, well above the ‘C’-shape where the nose meets the face. I use a round size 8watercolour brush to describe the form of these darks.``````3/4 VIEW1The eyebrow and bulk of the nose are described herewith Cadmium Red and Sap Green. The fl at plane of thebridge of the nose is captured by the darks on either side.2Compare the height of the eyebrows to help fi nd theorientation of the head, the eyebrow lifts up this side ofthe face and places the nose in context.3Now to explain the other side of the face, I’ve printedthe cheek edge with the razor sharp end of the fl at 1”brush. I always study with care the shape of the spacemade between the bridge of the nose, the side of the faceand the eyebrow. Notice how close the tip of the nose is tothe edge of the face, and the angle of the nose as itsweeps back into the face. There is a small change indirection at the top of the nose where it runs vertical for acentimetre before turning into the eyebrow.4I darken the tones where the eye socket meets thebridge of the nose on the right, and in the shadows atthe end of the nose. Then to position the nose in relation tothe lower half of the face I’ve painted the upper lip, whichallows the line of the lip to support the turn of the head.``````3/4 VIEWtipBuild up the noseas part of the face, allowing it to slowlyemerge fromthe skin tone``````Next month: Aine shares her tips for painting the ear57 Aine Divine.indd 59 08/06/2016 12:30
